Holiday Food Sampling

Holiday Food Sampling Gluten Free Grocery 2009

Holiday Food Sampling Gluten Free Grocery 2009

Last Saturday, Becky and I loaded the “big ride” filled with delicious gluten free and dairy free Holiday pies for a wonderful Holiday sampling at the Gluten Free Grocery(http://gfgrocery.com/) in Westchester, IL.  We had a blast!  Meet Cindy Erwin, proprietor, of the Gluten Free Grocery.  She has a really cool shop and wonderful customers.  Apple’s Bakery is so proud to be a Holiday partner with Cindy and her customers.  Several have pre-ordered Holiday desserts.  Thank you to all for the supportive comments for our work in the gluten free community.  We wish you the safest and most enjoyable Thanksgiving with family and friends.

Sharing a cookie on the road!

Mary -

While at the small food manufacturer’s conference (http://www.fpc.unl.edu/nsfmc/) in Lincoln, Nebraska, you were kind enough to give me samples of two of your gluten free cookies.  I just wanted to say thank you, and that they were absolutely delicious!  I’m relatively new to being gluten free, and needless to say up to this point hadn’t been impressed with the few cookies and snacks I’d sampled.  The first I tried was the Old-Fashioned molasses, and I was in awe.  Thank you so much for sharing those with me, I’ll be making a trip to your website soon to see the other varieties you have as well.

Simple Pleasures

Recently I decided to use some of the many sets of linen  I inherited as part of our daily meals. I was tired of paper towels and paper napkins.
So I went through the many sets and decided on the ones we would use….a light pale green with a morning glory flower embossed on them. When I first laid them the lunch table…” the man” said what are these? I said linen we are no longer using paper. “Nice” he said…we talked about the design. We now use them every day…sometimes we save things for ” special occasions” or “best” or “company” well every day is a special occasion if you choose to make it one. Every meal can be a “special occasion” as human nature to responds to beauty. Ask yourself what can you do to make this week’s meals a bit more special, elegant or relaxed. Food and a beautiful table is best shared…even if you are sharing that beauty with yourself!

Maintaining Relationships as a Celiac

Being a Celiac and trying to keep it all together in the world of friends, family, and dating can be tricky at best.

I see living gluten-free as my diet, and while I try not to expect people to remember every food that is safe for a Celiac to eat, I have found that it’s ten times easier to find out in advance which restaurant we will be lunching or dining in. With the Internet at the ready, I can “Google” the establishment and then review the menu well in advance! This way, when it comes time to order, I’m prepared and can avoid any issues with my meal. Also if I am asked to suggest a restaurant, I am able to look at my list of restaurants with gluten-free menus, making it easier all the way around.

Dating has its own drawbacks. Primarily, how to handle the food situation without looking as if I’m a food neurotic or some sort of high-maintenance nightmare! This is a fine line, let me tell you!

However, with increased global awareness of Celiac disease, and restaurants that designate menu items as gluten-free, outings with friends and dates have become much easier. Resources such as the Gluten Free Restaurant Awareness Program help those with Celiac disease find restaurants that have gluten-free menus. Other resources like CeliacHandbook.com offer guides to restaurants that have gluten-free items on their menus.

As a professional baker and blogger, I’m always on the lookout for other food and wellness blogs that offer great ideas and inspire me in my baking profession. I’m a huge fan of the cooking party company Hands On Gourmet, based in San Francisco. The president, Molly Fuller, is a friend of mine and a co-winner of the 2006 Make Mine a $Million award.

Hands On Gourmet’s blog is full of fine recipes, cooking techniques, and advice. Best of all, the blog posts include personal details and memories. Check it out here.
