Spring Cleaning

Spring is nearly here…for me, that means the dreaded “spring” cleaning!

Spring cleaning…just typing that makes me want to sneeze! I grew up with persistent bronchitis. It wasn’t until I was diagnosed as Celiac/gluten intolerant 22 years ago that my lungs began to clear. Unfortunately, dust still makes me congested. But, this is nothing a “Sudafed,” a cup of hot tea, and a lemon drop cookie cannot cure!

When it comes to cleaning, those with gluten intolerances must leave no label unread. What is safe today might have it in for you next week. When I clean, I make sure to have my prescriptions on hand, just in case.

I use a series of cleaning products: Murphy’s oil soap for the floor, and some vinegar with a squirt of dish detergent for the windows and mirrors. It’s important to use simple, healthy cleaners, which make it easier for me to breathe without any additional stress to either myself of the environment.

The right music is also important, since cleaning is my least favorite thing to do. I need the support of some “hip” music with a real beat to get me “excited”: Faith No More, Moby, Led Zeppelin, Miles Davis.

Another lemon drop cookie and more tea is the reward for getting it all done! Since, in another eight days, I will have to start all over, at least with the “surfaces.”

Welcome Guest Writer Estelle!

Business is booming! I’ve been busy at the bakery and away from my desk. But I have not forgotten you, my devoted readers! I’d still like to bring you the best in gluten-free advice and issues, but I also want to expand this blog to include other food and wellness topics. If there is anything you’d specifically like me to touch on, feel free to share your thoughts via comment or emails me at apples@mtco.com.

I’d also like to introduce a guest writer for Smiles Made From Scratch. Estelle Chandler, Vice President of Sales and Celiac for Apple’s Bakery’s gluten-free kitchen, will be offering her insight on everything from gluten-free remedies and delicious recipes to gardening and tea time. Estelle was diagnosed as Celiac over 22 years ago, so she’s a pro when it comes to gluten-free topics (see my previous post about Estelle). Keep an eye out for her posts!
